For startups looking to land the perfect domain name, there are a number of different strategies to take. There is hiring a domain broker, emailing the owner directly, or purchasing from a domain marketplace.
A Turkish startup named DKY recently illustrated the worst possible way to acquire a domain name. They emailed the owner, and when they couldn’t agree on a price resorted to a legal action called UDRP. The problem was that they didn’t work with an experienced domain name law firm and pursued a course of action that not only failed to secure the domain, but also resulted in an adverse legal finding that opened them up to additional costs and liabilities.
Domain acquisitions can be tricky and working with experienced professionals is the only sure way to navigate the complex process of acquiring domain names.
